### Like many horrors, *The Human Centipede* is scarier in your head.

*If you don't like horror movies or some good old graphic content, or spoilers to this frightening film, please skip this essay!*

Rudy Giuliani used to have a reputation as an honest politician. But times change. Mount Everest has a reputation as the hardest mountain to climb in the world, but K2 would like to have a word. The Human Centipede, a 2009 film with a name that makes one squirm, has a reputation of being revolting, outrageous, abominable. A monstrosity that no one should watch, lest they lose their innocence for good.

But does it centipede? And is it human?

Everyone my age has pretty much heard of this film, and I haven't met many who have watched it. When you know the premise of the plot, which comes up often in the discourse surrounding this piece of media, it's hard to want to voluntarily tune in to the circus. This flick basically marketed itself by way of the shock-value and "did you hear about this movie"-ness that came out of it's sick premise.

Which, let's get it out of the way. Is downright revolting: a mad scientist, who of course is German, named Dr. Heiter (translates to Dr. Cheerful.) abducts 3 tourists and performs a surgical procedure attaching them ass-to-mouth into a human centipede. The first of the bunch can eat proper food, but number 2 and 3 have to eat shit from up the chain.

Leave it in the comments would you rather be the middle or back... yikes. What a nightmare. You'd just have to acclimate and suck it up. (yes that's a pun. get over it, it's only a movie!)

Dr. Heiter even goes so far as to do a procedure severing the ligaments of his victims so that they can't extend their legs. Only crawl, which they learn to do in unison in the backyard. Katsuro, the Japanese tourist at the front with his booty hole sewed to a couple ladies behind him has to shit and then Heiter yells FEEEEEED HER! In a manner that is vaguely Tommy Wiseau. This whole scene is one of the biggest plot moments in the film. A grand reveal that ended up being kind of a big troll. Absurd and flat.

So is it Human? No humanity or meaningful spark in the substance. And a slap in the face to the promise of shock. I do have a high tolerance for gross stuff, but this shit was just plain silly.

I was more stunned like, yo what the fuck is this? Who thought this movie was smacking? It's ass. triple ass. (yes that's a pun, eat mine.)

Yikes! Man why did I decide to write an article about this fine piece of art... anyway.

My thesis (show don't tell) - shut up editor!

Anyway, the idea of this film is scarier than the movie itself, and the imaginations of the mind are more frightening than anything on your screen proper.

When I first heard the legend of this film, I said I'd never watch it. Too gross. And in 8th grade I said I'd never smoke weed and that people who did-so were losers.

Halloween 2026, I puffed away on at my Cereal Milk flavored weed pen and booted up the The Human Centipede: First Sequence on Amazon Prime Video. The jokes really do write themselves.

"Isn't that supposed to be really scary?" my lover pea Atea asked me after I told her of my movie night.

"That's... a choice" my sister's boyfriend Oliver added.

What does reputation mean for a film like this that I have let develop in my imagination over 17 years since hearing about it.

Watching this movie in the Big '26 was like cracking open a bottle of Sobe Life Water and listening to Eminem on my Ipod touch. It was like flo rida low coming out of my juke flip phone. It felt old. I don't care who you are, Hereditary is much scarier. The french film Martyrs is way, way, way worse and more unrelenting. Hopefully the scariest film I ever have to watch. Even a movie like Talk to Me packed a heavier punch on the scale to which it moved me. Because these films had range, texture and dynamic movement. Hereditary is about grief and pagan cultists, Talk to Me is basically a metaphor for drug addiction, Martyrs looks at insights into what happens after death. The Human Centipede is about... eating shit.

And dumb american tourists, wannabe looking cops kicking down the door, people trying to climb up a spiral staircase with their mouths and booty holes sewn together. The whole thing was just kind of edgelord and... drumroll please. Not all that scary.

There were some gross shots, with pus or stitches or bloody underwear, but the truly terrifying is not shown. The movie is oddly reserved in it's provocativeness. If you saw Call Me by Your Name, you noticed they cut away from the intimacy scenes to shots of the tree line outside. It was understated and left the viewer to imagine more. Human Centipede had the same editing style. Reserved and juxtaposed. Shots of the foliage outside the surgery bunker. Broken glass and toppled lamps.

The Human Centipede is like The Ring in the sense that you know about the glow of the TV and the tape and this cursed tale that kids in school told you was real. And with the Human Centipede, it was this fucked up surgery and a concept that no one could believe was put into a movie. The legend will always beat the tape. Because the horror we perceive is budget-less, German actor Dieter Laser yelling-less, toneless, plot-less, light-less. It's whatever's the most scary thing we can cook up. Which is a lot for my brain, as I did a good job at convincing myself for a long time that this movie was unwatchable. In the end... it was just kind of memorable.

Does it Human? not really. does it centipede? in a way. and as for Atea's question, was it scary? I'll bet your imagination reading this article is scarier. BOO!

2.5 stitches out of 5\. save your eyes from the tighty whities and skip this one so the legend of the mind can live on.
